KC Chiefs' 22-17 win over Atlanta Falcons last night shows how great teams know how to eke out wins even if it's not always in a blaze of glory. Michael Fedele, the cofounder with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes of Throne Sport Coffee, seems similarly willing to grind it out, picking his first retail partners carefully, adding field marketing to the mix this month and holding off on DSD, at least for now. As reported, the new entry contains 150 mg of caffeine augmented by V-vitamins, the electrolytes potassium and sodium and trio of branch chain amino acids (BCAAs) to offer "coffee+." It launched in 12-oz sleek cans in Black, French Vanilla, Salted Caramel and Mocha Java versions. The branding emphasizes the Sport Coffee part of name, with Throne presumably included for trademarking reasons.Fedele, a vet most recently of the Lance Collins and Mike Repole vehicle Body Armor, which exited to Coca-Cola, reported a string of modest milestones as he builds brand methodically from his Stamford, Conn, base in challenging environment. Earlier this year, the co quietly closed on $8 mil initial capital raise, led by Mahomes, who's #2 shareholder behind Fedele, and unidentified array of CPG and bev execs and vets investing individually, as well as sports marketing pros and over a dozen pro athletes from every major US league. He's also fleshed out his team: he declined to disclose size of payroll but noted that all but one colleague had worked alongside him at Body Armor.So far Throne has kept focus almost entirely on launch partners Casey's General Store, Hy-Vee and Amazon, only lately adding 200+ doors from Hy-Vee's Fast & Fresh c-store banner and another 300 doors of Jackson c-store chain. That brings total to 3,500 doors in 25 states, many of them heartland markets. The new field marketing effort has worked runs, pickleball and college events within Hy-Vee and Casey's territories to drive shoppers to the stores. All retail partners are direct-ship so far, as Fedele reserves judgment on whether and when DSD needs to be part of the mix. At both Casey's and Hy-Vee, he said Throne has outsold new items from more established brands like Starbucks, La Colombe, Black Rifle and Alani Nu. Early evidence is brand is reaching base of fitness and health-minded consumers, suggesting that core proposition is resonating. So far no tweaks are crying out to be made, tho Fedele remains vigilant to what learning can be gleaned from the market. So far he's guarded about 2025 plans, saying only that he's had conversations with variety of retails who operate in several different channels. So it's TBD whether brand will move into mass merchandisers like Walmart or Target or club chains like Costco.Mahomes? He obviously has demanding day job that he performs well, but he's found time to meet with handful of retailers and remains in constant communication with Fedele. He was focus of launch video and his wearing of Sport Coffee shirt at preseason game spiked sales on Amazon. He's seeded the NSF-certified bev throughout Chiefs' facility even as Throne team has gotten it placed at roughly half of MLB and NFL teams, Michael informed us. So even tho those are behind-scenes presences, they're building buzz and cred behind functional coffee line.
