The only 3 top-30 brands in supers that grew at a double-digit pace last 13 weeks were all subpremiums: Keystone Light up 11%, Pabst Blue Ribbon up 12%, Miller High Life Light up 15%. Yep, you read that right. Meanwhile, top imports either slowed down lots or in some cases, declined. Corona Extra just flat, Tecate up 2%, Corona Light up 6% and Labatt Blue down 5% for 13 weeks thru Nov 24. Among top 5 imports, only Heineken continued up 9% over last 3 mos (compared to 14% growth for last 52 weeks). As for top malternatives, they
Beer Biz in Supers Stayed Soft Thru Nov 24; Thanksgiving Timing, Weather, Economy Effects
It wasn’t just Oct; beer biz got softer yet in supers thru Nov 24. In fact, supermkt volume down 6.7% for 4 weeks thru Nov 24, according to IRI, following 0.2% drop for 4 wks thru Nov 3 (supers about 20% of total biz, but trends generally better there than overall). This recent softness includes ugly double-digit declines for 2 weeks thru Nov 24, compared to 3% gain YTD thru Oct. So what gives? "Soft patch" at retail because of timing of Thanksgiving, lousier weather this yr, strong volume "comp" last yr, "initial consumer sticker shock" to Oct 1 price hikes and weaker economy, according to Bill Pecoriello at Morgan Stanley. Thanksgiving a week later this year and lotsa purchases actually made in days following Thanksgiving. Lotsa eyes on Nov 25-Dec 1 week; figures not available at presstime, but even with a strong last week, Nov likely down.
Interestingly, beer pricing still held up very well thru Nov 24 as avg AB prices in supers up 3%+ for 4 and 13 weeks and Miller’s avg prices up 3.6% for 4 weeks and 4.4% for 13 weeks. Avg prices paid for Modelo brands up 4%+ last 13 weeks too. Coors, Labatt USA and Heineken prices relatively unchanged. With beer biz down recently and lotsa pressure on pricing of so many other goods, more are questioning how long healthy beer pricing can last. Retail environment is increasingly dicey with price wars going on in fast food, tobacco and other related bizzes. Price pressure ain’t letting up; giant super chain Kroger’s warned of lower earnings as it cut prices. Wal-Mart is increasingly eating into hides of supers too with its low prices (note: Wal-Mart no longer participates in IRI data, even tho it’s #1 grocer and growing rapidly). And "competitive prices pressuring holiday sales," front-paged Supermkt News post-Thanksgiving. WSJ reporters chided brewers for raising price in such an economic environment. Theme of article was that beer stocks have outperformed in recent yrs because of beer industry’s ability to raise price, but that scenario under pressure.
Gambrinus prexy Carlos Alvarez underscored uniqueness of Gambrinus approach and history in remarks to Beer INSIGHTS Seminar and Gambrinus natl sales conference. Formed in 1986, Gambrinus will sell near 69 mil cases in 02 (nearly 60 mil cases of Modelo brands). Modelo brands are up 12.5% thru Oct, Carlos said. Gambrinus up double-digits 10 yrs in a row. Carlos detailed: Corona

While consolidation of non-AB distribs continues to be economic necessity in many mkts, it ain't all smooth sailing, a wide-ranging panel at Beer INSIGHTS Seminar showed. Some issues: logjams in deal process, supplier friction in consolidated houses, supplier agreements in conflict and more. "The math is ugly here," noted Coors sr veep Rob Klugman, referring to how suppliers have to learn to live together in consolidated houses: "We can
Ex-distrib Williams filed "notice of settlement" in mid-Oct that said it had settled differences with AB in lawsuit over proposed sale AB disapproved last yr. No one's talkin'. Turns out judge never officially resolved AB motion to limit any potential damages to $5.5 mil difference between disapproved sale price and ultimate sale price (see Oct 21 INSIGHTS). Williams sought full $57+ mil "fair market value" under Tex law.
Back-to-back fed ct decisions boost momentum of suppliers who want to ship alc bevs direct to consumers. Fed judges rapped NY and Fla direct shipments laws because both states ban out-of-state suppliers from shipping direct, but allow in-state suppliers to do it. That smelled like unconstitutional protectionism to Fed judges, and violates Commerce Clause. Courts in Va, NC and Tex have also ruled direct shipping bans which exempt in-state wineries violate Commerce Clause. NY judge suggested state could either drop ban or eliminate exceptions; he leans in direction of eliminating ban. US Appeals Ct sent Fla ban back to US Dist Ct to find out whether state can show ban addresses "core concern" under 21st Amendment that it can
