Michigan-based brewers collectively declined 4% to ~432K bbls in MI in 2024 vs 2023, state data reports show. That put MI brewers' share of MI beer down 0.1 pts to 8.2. Yet several top cos grew in MI last year and some of the largest cos were only down slightly, while smaller locals and brewpubs collectively declined at far steeper rates. (Editor's note: state data doesn't capture all of Bell's and Founders volume in state, CBN understands, so total in-state share is likely a bit higher but trending similarly.) Bell's/New Belgium In-State Volume Down 1%; Founders Down 4% Bell's/New Belgium and Founders were collectively down 2% to 173K bbls, state report shows. Yet Bell's/New Belgium dipped just 1% to 121K bbls and gained slight share to 2.3 in this dataset. Founders volume was down 4.4% to just under 52K bbls, still holding about 1 share of MI beer. So more Bell's decline last yr came from outside its home mkt while Founders outperformed its MI trend in other parts of the country. Even with some of their MI volume not accounted for in state reports, Bell's and Founders collectively have 3.3 share of MI beer and account for 40% of total in-state brewer volume tracked.Short's & Old Nation Down 1.5-2%; Atwater, New Holland, Cheboygan, Griffin Claw, Saugatuck & Brew Detroit Grew Many of the next largest MI brewers either grew or outperformed total MI beer in 2024. Short's was down 1.7% but still sold over 40K bbls of beer in MI and gained slight share. Atwater managed to grow 4% to over 16K bbls in its home state and remained #4 in-state brewer overall, even as deal closed for Tilray to acquire the brewer from MC in Sep 2024. New Holland grew nearly 3% and passed Old Nation to reclaim the #5 spot among top in-state brewers. Yet Old Nation dipped just 1.5% to 14.7K bbls. Cheboygan Brewing remained one of the best-trending local brewers, up 6% to 9.5K bbls in 2024. Griffin Claw grew volume slightly (+0.6%) to nearly 8.4K bbls. Saugatuck grew nearly 8% to 5K bbls. And Brew Detroit grew fastest of all (off a much smaller base), up 26% to nearly 5K bbls. Altogether, 9 of the top 12 in-state brewers gained share of MI beer shipments and 6 of 12 grew volume.Steepest Drops from Perrin, Northern United, Odd Side, Keweenaw & Blackrocks There were still some extra tuff trends among locals in MI. Monster-owned Perrin Brewing, Northern United Brewing (Jolly Pumpkin & North Peak) and Odd Side Ales each declined more than 20% and lost over 1K bbls for the year in MI. Once a top 10 player in-state, Perrin slipped below 5K bbls, while both Northern United and Odd Side fell below 4K bbls in 2024. Keweenaw nearly lost 1K bbls in-state as volume slipped 9.5% to 9K bbls. And Blackrocks dipped nearly 5% to about 10,300 bbls. Smaller microbreweries and brewpubs collectively declined at steeper rates too, including total MI brewpubs down 17% and all other microbreweries collectively down high singles.Blake's MI-Based Cider Up 20%; Just ~3K Bbls Tracked Blake's Cider MI-produced volume grew 20% to 3K bbls in Michigan for 2024 vs 2023, according to state data tracking in-state wineries under 16% ABV. Yet these reports don't capture the majority of Blake's volume which is produced primarily in Walcott, NY, where co built "an $8 million state of the art production facility with over 2 million gallons capacity (1 million cases)," co stated previously. Including Blake's Cider volume from out-of-state and other Blake's Beverage brands puts it among top in-state companies, even more so now that it partnered with Benchmark (see above).
