By time entrepreneur Lance Collins arrived as would-be savior of struggling Recover 180 organic sports drink in 2023, the brand had missed next year's window for conventional grocery chains. So even tho it's as broadly targeted as Collins' earlier Body Armor brand, revamped entry initially was forced to ply natural channel: Whole Foods, Sprouts, Fresh Market. By Lance's calculation, that made 2025 the first real year for renewed brand as it rippled out into likes of Giant, Meijer, HEB, Hy-Vee, Shop Rite, Albertsons Pavilions chain and most of all, over 2,000 Kroger stores spanning 20 divs as he committed $1 mil per month to sampling activity and worked to assemble DSD network. By now, wielding Kroger data to show brand resonates, he's ready to go more aggressive, aiming to build store base from current 18K or so to 70K or more while augmenting flavor range with Tropical Ice and Orange Dreamsicle while unleashing endorser Travis Kelce in video campaign that flays Gatorade for its use of artificial colors. An out-of-home already has launched in key markets like LA, NY and Miami assuring viewers that Recover 180 Fruit Punch flavor "has 100% less Red Dye 40 than Gatorade Fruit Punch." Entrepreneur behind successfully exited brands like Fuze Tea, NOS Energy, Core Hydration and Body Armor says he's on track to achieve about $10 mil in revenue this year and 25% ACV as he guns for $24 mil in revenue next year. Recall that Recover 180 had been launched by real estate developer Mike Meldman, who struggled in brutally competitive sector that also included Collins' Body Armor, which eventually exited to Coca-Cola. Apparently unencumbered by non-compete, Collins ventured back into segment by coming in as partner to Meldman, turning to his stable of celeb and sports endorsers and bev workhorses to rethink and re-energize brand (BBI, Oct 11 and 12 2023). It continues to be a work in progress: over past year, for instance, with backlash building toward erythritol sweetener, he's dialed down its presence from 17 g to 5 g as part of blend that now includes Reb-A stevia as well as coconut water. While Tropical Ice and Orange Dreamsicle are entering the flavor range, he's dropping Lemon Lime, a poor seller despite being counter to Gatorade's #1 flavor. Range includes both conventional sports drink flavors and more new-agey ones with Super Berry, Watermelon, Fruit Punch and Peach Mango.As noted, Kroger data has been encouraging enough for Collins' team to ride it in presentations to other retailers. So far, grocer has carried 4 sku's in both warm and cold sets but Collins is confident it will pick up a few more in next reset, even as well-financed rivals Prime Hydration and Mas+ by Messi seem to have been deleted from selection (story below). During recent 12-wk period, brand managed to sell over 13 units per store per week in Kroger ecosystem, with particular resonance in Fred Meyer, Smiths and Frys banners. Out of 2,058 stores, some 921 locations were moving over 10 units per store per week.To support expansion, Recover 180 team is rapidly adding DSD partners, given stance of most key retailers that they prefer to be serviced via DSD distribution, Collins said. Key partners include Big Geyser in NY, Sunset and Straub in LA, Lenore in San Diego and Bud house Donaghy as well as Morris in NorCal. Other A-B-aligned partners include Hensley in Ariz, Nevada Bev in that state and Bud network in areas served by midwestern Meijer chain. To minimize shipping lanes, brand is copacking in Las Vegas, Okla and NJ.Key members of team include Andrew Griffiths, Collins' first employee at Core Hydration, who manages natl accts. Longtime ally Brandon Cervelli (Body Armor, Core, A Shoc) handles western sales while new-age vet Bob Miller handles both midwestern and eastern regions. For key NY region, former AriZona Brands exec Lou Fabiano just came aboard after truncated tour at Lucky Energy (BBI, Oct 7). Allen Taute, a vet of Beam, Moet Hennessy and Guarachi Wine, just came aboard as CFO. As we noted a coupla weeks ago, Collins continues to work to bring a cluster of other brands to ignition, including Accelerator Energy (BBI, Oct 10) and Zen WTR.As always, with his enviable track record, Collins has been able to collect celebs as investors and endorsers the way some people collect postage stamps. Active and retired athletes include likes of Kelce, James Harden, Rob Gronkowski, Austin Reaves, Drew Brees, Scottie Pippen, Joe Flacco, Michael Strahan and John Elway. Also in mix are recording artists like Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. As noted, Kelce is being harnessed for video campaign that will lay out the case vs Gatorade's artificials, echoing stance earlier taken by Body Armor as an indie brand.
