Vita Coco reported 37% revenue surge in Q3 and raised its anticipated guidance for full year even as it navigates chaotic tariff regime that its execs said is making it hard to plan sourcing and pricing responses for coming year. After levying price hikes in May and Jul, it's taking a pause for now to see whether any tariff relief arrives and how rivals are responding. On heels of report, COCO shares rose 7% in trading today so far today, for market cap of $2.5 bil. Net sales in Q3 surged 37% to $182.3 mil, with growth in core Vita Coco coconut water brand augmented by rollout of coconut-milk-based Treats extension aimed at enticing new users into category. As co likes to remind investors, coconut water category, as measured in Circana scans, is outgrowing even the energy drink category, 16.9% to 14.9% by volume, even wider margin by $$, and cofounder/exec chmn Mike Kirban sees no ceiling in sight. Gross margin narrowed a point to 38%. Operating income rose 35.6% to $27.9 mil. For YTD sales are up 24% to $482 mil. Operating income over the 9 mos is up 40.3% to $72.3 mil. It's now anticipating full-year sales to come in $580-595 mil range despite tariff impact. It concluded Q3 with $204 mil in cash on the books and no debt.By region in Q3, core Americas biz enjoyed 35.2% runup to $151.7 mil as branded biz soared 40.9% to $132.4 mil, buoyed by 30.3% gain on Vita Coco coconut water. That was offset a tad by 12.9% decline in private-label biz to $14.4 mil. Gross margin contracted to 38.1% from 38.8%. International biz, mainly UK and Germany, soared 48.1% to $30.6 mil with both branded and PL businesses enjoying strong gains. Vita Coco coconut water entries grew 35.9% in volume. Gross margin contracted to 35.3% from 38.7%.On pricing front, as noted, Vita Coco took pricing increases in US in mid-May and then mid-Jul to cover dollar impact of 10% baseline tariffs imposed by Trump administration. Overall, it's dealing with blended tariff of 23% including 50% levy on Brazil, a key sourcing country along with Philippines. Twin price moves left tags up 7% on 2-year basis, per Circana data. That's happened in environment where there's no consistency to tariff regime - for example, coconuts from Cambodia and Malaysia get an exemption but coconut water from same countries doesn't. "It's pretty clear the administration is looking to exclude unavailable natural resources and we've got to make sure coconut water is recognized," said Kirban, who's been spending time in DC lobbying. Further, as CEO Martin Roper noted, case challenging legality of most of the tariffs heads to Supreme Court next week. Meanwhile, rivals' reactions to the import taxes are all over the map, with some taking significant pricing early, others making more incremental moves like Vita Coco and others standing pat. So COCO will keep powder dry for now, Roper indicated. For now, COCO is hoping for moderation in elevated ocean freight rates as one source of relief and laying preliminary plans to rejigger production network. It's also reached out to suppliers but recognizes "this isn't a particularly large-margin biz for them" and they're limited in what they can do.Vita Coco holds 43.6% share of category in measured channels, per Circana. Still, channel data shared by co indicated that some formats have lost retail presence for YTD in MULO large-format stores. Much of that can be attributed to Walmart's banishing of brand to juice aisle, move it's undoing with establishment of Modern Hydration set that should see net gain in presence for brand (BBI, Oct 7). Core half-liter singles have slipped from 73% ACV to 70% while 1-liter multipacks have slipped from 44% to 35% ACV. Its above-premium Farmer's entry has gone from 47% ACV to 34%. But brand has scored gains in a key growth target, convenience, with 1-liter singles jumping from 7% ACV to 15% and single cans of its c-store-oriented Juice entry advancing from 26% ACV to 31% ACV. Core half-liter Tetra edged up from 61% ACV to 62%.Innovation: Treats Fulfilling Role Recruiting New Users On innovation front, one key vehicle for winning new consumers to category has been Vita Coco Treats, coconut-milk-based entry that, like Pressed before it, seeks to conform more to impression consumers get eating coconut-flavored ice cream. Offered in nostalgic flavors like Orange & Cr&egrave;me, it seems to be performing intended role as bringing in new consumers without cannibalizing core brand, and there is evidence some are moving on to actual coconut water offerings. And while it failed to make Walmart set this year, COCO commanders expect it to make next reset. Nothing said on PWR Lift protein water, which never moved beyond modest test in a few markets, nor on Ever & Ever aluminum-bottle water brand. And acquired Runa guayusa brand on which Vita Coco lavished much investment and attention took another $185K impairment charge this year after exiting market in Dec 2023.M&A: Nothin' to See Here Folks Core credo of Vita Coco as publicly traded co is to build "the better-beverage platform of the future," as it reminds investors every quarter. Put another way, "to be the leading platform for brands in the functional beverage category." In other words, for the right emerging bevcos, COCO should be viewed very much as a strategic exit possibility. Still, 4 years in from its IPO, that platform still is pretty much just Vita Coco brand as internal innovation efforts so far haven't borne fruit and acquisition targets like Spindrift have proved too pricy. With nothing to report, Vita Coco brass doesn't bring up subject on quarterly calls. But it came up in q&a today via analyst question on capital allocation priorities. "Our priorities haven't really changed," Roper replied. First is growth of core business via investments such as inventory building and marketing. Next is innovation and 3d is M&A. CEO recognized that $200 mil "is a pretty healthy cash balance for a company our size." And while execs have "talked about M&A a lot in the 3-4 years we've been public, we obviously have not done anything." That's because it's hewing to disciplined approach where it "will not do M&A for M&A's sake, that's not part of our mission statement."
