This week in 2000, Businessweek profiled New Mexico Coors distrib Maloof family and their many other holdings, valued at $1.1 bil. Mag wrote that Maloof bev distribs worth $300 mil. Beer distrib "eventually fueled the family fortune." Maloof family also owned 16% stake in First Security Corp worth $320 mil, 2 casinos worth $150 mil (and was planning to build 3d casino with 2,000 rooms) and Sacramento Kings NBA franchise plus ARCO arena worth another $260 mil. Maloofs bought NBA team in early '99; owned Houston Rockets back in early 80's but sold after the father George died at young age. While mom Colleen acted as family "chairwoman," Joe Maloof ran distrib, and also ran Kings with brother Gavin while George ran casino and youngest bro Phillip was a NM state senator, noted Businessweek. The Maloofs sold their beer distrib in 2010. This week in 2002, INSIGHTS noted that with closing of the Gold Coast/Thies distrib deal in South Florida the previous week, the entire state of FL was now consolidated Miller/Coors houses. There was also another intriguing element of the deal: there was a new Corona distributor named Busch, Peter Busch that is, August's half-brother, who owned AB distrib Southern Eagle. He bought about 200K cases of Corona and paid over $25 per case.This week in 2006, INSIGHTS reported on the first big deal of the New Year. Largest US beer distrib Reyes Holdings was buying 4.2-mil-case Charleston, SC Miller/Coors distrib Henry J. Lee Dist from longtime owner Dennis Lee. Deal would bring Reyes Holdings "full circle," said co-chairman Jude Reyes, who noted that Dennis helped Reyes "get started" in Spartanburg, SC in 1976. Deal brought Reyes up to 44-45 mil cases on annual basis. Reyes Holdings' 2006 revs were projected to be $7.5 bil, including non-beer biz. As we reported on Wed, Reyes Holdings is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and now distributes 1.3 bil cases annually across all its different biz units.This week in 2007, INSIGHTS reported on what an earnings machine AmBev was. InBev's EBITDA "and net profit margins have risen well above those of its peers&hellip;. Its focus on costs distinguishes it from the competition," wrote Dresdner Kleinwort's Andrew Holland in extensive review of InBev finances and benefits of InBev's zero-based budgeting program (ZBB). Dresdner Kleinwort noted: "The cost cutting competence of the Brazilian management team, when put in charge of the 'old Interbrew' business, has given the company a new route to profit growth." Exhibit A was AmBev, Brazilian biz where beer EBITDA margin jumped from 35% in 2000 to nearly 50% by 2006. That was even tho volume grew less than 1% a yr and it lost mkt share. In same period, "Beer Brazil" EBITDA tripled to almost $2 bil. Note: AmBev still had dominant mkt share in Brazil (near 70) and margins higher in high share mkts. Between 2000 and 2005 AmBev's cost of goods sold dropped from 50% of net sales to 31.7%. InBev was trying to work similar magic in other regions and certainly followed same path in US when it took over AB.This week in 2008, an analysis from Bank of America's Bryan Spillane headlined: "Is Immigrant Consumer Pulling Down Corona?" "The Modelo brands, despite their price points, do skew more heavily to immigrants (documented and undocumented) from Latin America," wrote Bryan. "Given the pullback in housing markets and dependent industries (e.g construction), it is possible that undocumented worker purchasing power is being squeezed." This was precisely what distrib/Crown sources had been telling INSIGHTS, especially concerning mkts like Southern California, Arizona and Florida where these effects were disproportionate. Noting "severe dropoff in remittances" to "several Latin American countries" (i.e. money going from US back to home country), Bryan added "it could be that Corona is taking a more cyclical hit than is generally realized."This week in 2011, Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World campaign was such a hit that New Yorker mag profiled the star. The Most Interesting Man in the World may be "expanding faster than the Universe," making Dos Equis the only beer brand with more than 1 million likes on Facebook, wrote mag. But it turned out his origins were more mundane: he was a 72 yr-old "Jewish guy from the Bronx" revealed the amusing New Yorker piece. He based his character on his great friend Fernando Lamas. Before his spectacular success with MIM, his most frequent role was as "that guy" on tv shows, "very often that guy who gets killed" on shows like Bonanza, Mannix, Gunsmoke and Hawaii Five O. Dos Equis just brought Jonathan Goldsmith and his MIM character back this past month.This week in 2014, an analysis by Nielsen revealed just how invested AB was annually in Super Bowl ads. AB had spent $149 mil from 2009-14 and was top Super Bowl spender, over $50 mil more than the second biggest spender PepsiCo, according to Nielsen data featured in Adweek. The rest of the top 5: Coke at $62 mil, Volkswagen at $57 mil and Fiat at $55 mil. A few days after that, AB's ad featuring Bud's Clydesdales and a puppy helped co finish on top of USA Today's Ad Meter for 12th time in last 14 yrs.This week in 2016, in lengthy, detailed letter, MillerCoors ceo Gavin Hattersley explained to Teamster prexy James Hoffa why the "gut wrenching" decision to close Eden Brewery "is final" and was "necessary to help ensure the longer-term sustainability of MillerCoors." Gavin also took issue "with many of the assertions" in Hoffa's recent letter requesting MC to "Keep Eden Open," including charges that decision was "callous and short sighted," linked to proposed ABI-SAB deal, aimed to raise price and more. Gavin opened letter noting MC "values the work of 1400 Teamster members in its breweries," and "at no time did anyone" involved in decision "disregard the impact" on Eden employees. In fact, MC "worked hard" to lessen impact, giving full year advance notice so workers could fill spots in other plants, efforts that had "already produced job offers." Gavin also reiterated simple fact that MC lost 10 mil bbls since 2008, that analysis showed once MC fell below 60 mil bbls, "brewing needs would be met more efficiently and cost effectively with one less brewery."
