As state-run stores seek to capitalize on the future growth foreseen by lead players in the RTD spirits category, it's about "winning with the winners," AB's Jake Kirsch commented during a mainstage panel discussion at NABCA's Annual Conference in Phoenix yesterday. Over the last 4 yrs some 300 new brands entered spirits RTDs but just 10 got 2/3 of the growth, he cited. And "most of those" were represented by folks "on the stage," he said alongside Gallo's Liz Tomic, Stateside's Clem Pappas and Boston Beer's Scott Hempstead. "That's why you're here," moderator and former regulator George Griffin quipped. Yet at a conference with so much focus on spirits, the panel of top spirits RTD players was as striking for who wasn't there as for who was. Major distillers show up in force at NABCA to connect with state operators in a major channel for the category. But "the winners" put on stage to discuss the most consistent "growth engine" in the biz, as George called it, were the country's top brewer and top vintner, as well as a craft distiller and a craft brewer that each grew into major RTD players in the last 5-10 yrs.Spirits RTDs Can Double in 5 Yrs; Sourcing Half of Growth from Beer/Malt and Traditional Spirits So Far All of the panelists see "a lot of runway" for spirits-based RTDs, but Clem was the only one who ventured a guess for where it can go "in five years," forecasting that the category "can double over that time frame." So far, the growth has been "about half and half," Jake explained: "half the growth is category expansion," bringing in new consumers, and the other half is sourcing from spirits and malt bevs, AB's research shows.Clem concurred on the sources of growth and cited "pent up demand" for products like spirits RTDs as a major driver. The "US was always kind of an anomaly," Liz commented, referencing earlier times when young legal age drinkers entered alcohol thru beer. In many countries, the entry point has been "easier drinking, sessionable, familiar fruit flavors," she continued, which the RTD space now offers. As RTDs bring in younger legal age drinkers, the challenge is to "keep them in and keep them loyal."More Segments, Clean Up in RTD Aisle Coming As the spirits RTD category grows, more segments will emerge, most of the panelists commented, expanding beyond current lead segments of seltzer, tea/lemonade, cocktails and this yr's emergent segment of sports drink-inspired bevs, which Clem thinks "can be a real category." But "a massive clean up" is coming, Scott thinks, as each segment evolves a bit like malt/sugar hard seltzer did, with a flood of brands that eventually gets pared down into a small number of leaders. That process always "takes a few years to play out," Clem commented, and you "don't know who the winner's going to be at the outset" every time, he observed.RTD spirits brands have to be "easy to understand" and "accessible," Scott said, because consumers "don't want to think that much" about them, he finds. And so the category also has to be "easy to shop," he advised. As it scales, it will become "slightly less efficient" than it is now, Liz thinks, but probably won't get to the kind of crowding seen in craft beer or wine, since retailers "don't have to have one from every county to be relevant" and can focus on "beacon brands in each segment." In her view, "as long as we build clean segments," it'll keep it easy to merchandise.Surprises on Price and Speed; Achieving "Spirits Margins on Beer Velocities" is "the Dream" During growth so far, Scott, Boston Beer and some distrib partners have been "surprised" by "how open this consumer is for the trade up" and their "willingness to pay" higher prices. "Holy cow," he recalls thinking, "people are not afraid to spend $27.99 on a twelve-pack of RTD." Then too, as the category develops further, Liz sees "a lot of opportunities to build price tiers" and fill in gaps between "just premium and subpremium."The speed that top RTD brands can move has been another pleasant surprise, Jake said, citing recent gains for Cutwater driven by reaching velocities of 15-20x Tito's, the fastest-selling traditional spirits brand. But "that's the dream, right?" Liz said. If top players can deliver "spirits margins on beer velocities&hellip;then we all win."The "Holy Trinity" of Flavor, Clarity, Execution; Gotta Invest and "Get Everything Right" But winning in RTDs ain't easy, the panel explained. To succeed, you need the "holy trinity," in Liz's experience. First, the "liquid has to win." But the "clarity of your proposition" has to be immediately clear. Then it's gotta be executed properly in the "right size," "right place," "right price." She's spoken to plenty of startup founders who made "truly remarkable liquids," but didn't have the other pieces together. Suppliers have also "got to have money to compete in this business," Scott offered, to "invest and stick your neck out." And yes, Clem agreed with Liz, you've got to "get everything right" on execution, with distribution a key piece of the puzzle.
